Alcatraz Field Trip Update
Tickets for the ferry to Alcatraz are now available for our field trip date. It is necessary for each person to buy their own tickets (they make buying blocks of tickets awkward, to forestall scalpers). Details below.
Our trip will be "semi-escorted", meaning that Landis will lead the group to the Berkeley BART station, then transfer to the Muni Embarcadero line, and walk a block to the ferry terminal. You can follow him, or go on your own, it is an easy and scenic route. After two or three hours on the island you take the ferry back (they run approximately hourly) and you can either stay on in the city for dinner or retrace your route to return to Berkeley.
To get your personal tickets for the Alcatraz ferry, go to their web site and use a credit card. Start at:
Select June 18 from the calendar and the number of tickets you need (up to eight). It will show you what is available. Select the Day Tour PM at 3:30 pm. (If that is full, you can make the 2:50 pm by hustling ahead of the group, or the 3:55 pm.)
You can print your own e-ticket - bring it with you. When you get to the terminal you must go to the window to pick up your boarding pass (the real ticket), showing them a picture id and the credit card you used to purchase the ticket.
It would be best to do this soon. Alcatraz is one of the leading tourist attractions in the country, and sells out every day in summer, often two weeks or more in advance.
